If you’ve lost or damaged the power adapter for your laptop, you’re obviously going to need another one. Sometimes it may not be possible to get the specific power supply for your computer; maybe your laptop is older and they don’t make them anymore. Whatever the case may be, if you can’t find the exact power supply you need, you can probably find a universal laptop power adapter that will fit your needs.
Universal power adapters look like your standard power supply, except the tip that would go into your computer has interchangeable ends. Most of these power adapters come with 8-10 different tips. These tips are often color coded, and while several may technically “fit” into your power input, only one will be compatible with your laptop. When searching for a universal laptop charger, you want to make sure to check the specifications of the adapter to ensure that it is compatible with your laptop.
The great thing about a universal laptop power adapter is that it can be used with multiple laptops. That means if you have more than one laptop, you’ll always have a power supply for it. If you go out and purchase a new laptop, you’ll have a spare.
There is a drawback to universal power adapters though. Because of the fact that some laptop makers use proprietary hardware, these adapters might not actually work. They might even fit, and use the exact same specification for the male/female attachment, but the internal workings of the computer will not recognize the universal power supply, and won’t charge or power your computer. Sometimes the power supply will even power the laptop, but won’t be able to charge the battery. This is why it’s important to not only check the size specifications, but to make sure the specifications for the adapter list your exact computer model.
Universal power adapters are very useful if you have a computer that uses a standard power input. If you use an Apple computer, you’re out of luck. You can buy a third party power adapter cheaper than Apple’s, but you won’t find a universal power supply for a Mac. Most PC laptops though, use standard electronics, so finding the right power supply for your computer shouldn’t be too tough. Try online outlets like Amazon.com and Tiger Direct.
