If you prefer to have a plug that goes directly from your car to your laptop, then you’ll probably want to get a universal charger.  They is especially convenient if you have multiple laptops that you use (one for work, one for home) or if you upgrade your computer frequently.  You don’t want to have to run out and buy a new car charger every time you change computers; this becomes a real pain, and can get rather expensive.  Every universal laptop charger doesn’t necessarily work with all laptops, so ensure that your charger is going to be compatible with the laptops you have as well as the brand of laptops you tend to purchase.

Laptop Car Power Inverter

Another useful choice that is even more versatile than a universal charger is a car power inverter.  These essentially turn the DC used in your car, to AC typically used in the home.  The plug looks exactly like those used in the home, and you can plug any laptops normal charger into this adapter.  Some of these inverters even have a usb port on them as well, so you can charge electronics that are powered and charged via USB.

The two options are your best bet for a laptop car charger.  There are more model-specific chargers out there for popular laptop makers like HP, Toshiba, Acer, and Sony Vaio, but in general a universal option like those presented above are going to work a lot better for you.  Remember that you do still need to ensure that there is compatibility between universal chargers, and even inverters before plugging in your laptop.

Is your Acer laptop charger not working?  As with any laptop, you might eventually find yourself needing a new laptop charger.  There are many ways to wear out a laptop power adapter, and it’s not uncommon for them to wear down or break from standard usage.  Maybe yours isn’t even broken, but you use your laptop at several set locations, and you find it easier to have a charger at each location to make it easier to plug right in and get to work.  Luckily, these chargers are readily available for purchase online, and you’ll find a selection of them below.

Acer makes quite a few computers, but many of their adapters are cross compatible. Of course your other option is to find a universal laptop power adapter, but it’s usually better to go with one specifically made for your brand of computer. If you can, you should probably find one made by Acer, but there are quality third party options available as well, and these are usually cheaper.  However, if the charger is suspiciously cheap you really have to wonder about the quality.  Sometimes it’s true that you get what you pay for, and you don’t want your Acer power adaptor dying on you 3 days after you’ve purchased it.  Just ensure that the Acer laptop charger you purchase is compatible with your computer, and that it’s made by a quality and reputable company.

I guess you could call me an Apple fanboy.  I have owned just about every product they’ve made since, oh, 1990 or so.  And while I continue to think that they create superior computers, and innovative computing solutions, the laptop power adapters for Mac have been notoriously crappy.  Perhaps I just beat mine up worse than most people, but I have never had a power supply last more than a year.  The biggest issue with this is that a new power supply from the actual Apple store is so expensive that it’s really not something I want to replace every year.  This being said, there are many third market power adapters on the market that do the job, and oftentimes better than the original.

We’ve talked about Targus universal laptop power adapters before, and despite their recent recall issues (every company goes through that at some point or another) I still believe they make incredibly high quality products.  For the price of a power supply that is limited to a specific computer, they have a universal power adapter that charges not only laptops, but one other smaller portable device at the same time.  They do have a universal tip for older Mac (you can find out if your computer is compatible using the “Tip Configurator“), but they don’t have the newer MagSafe tips (yet?).

As a matter of fact, you won’t find a third party MagSafe laptop power adapter out there for a reasonable price.  This is because Apple has yet to license the MagSafe technology out to third-party manufacturers.  There is an option out there where a maker will actually purchase the MagSafe portion of a Mac adapter and attach it to their own adapter, but this solution is expensive because they are required to purchase that MagSafe adapter straight from Apple (which we’re already discussed is expensive, like anything Apple makes).  This is unfortunate because there are some great manufacturers of third-party products out there (Kingston, iGo, Targus) who are simply not being allowed to play with Mac laptops at the moment.

Right now, if you’ve got a newer Apple laptop (Macbook, Macbook Pro, or even later generations of the iBook and Powerbook) you’re pretty much screwed as far as finding a universal power adapter, or any other third-party products.  However, if you have the older style, you should be able to find a laptop power adapter for Mac that will suit your needs perfectly.

It’s easy enough to get power to your laptop at home.  Unless you live in a shanty somewhere with no power, you can simply plug it into the wall.  Not that I’m making light of people who live in shanty towns; I’m sure it sucks.  But let’s be honest, they don’t have a laptop, or the internet, so they’re not reading this.  Anyway, as I was saying, at home you just take your laptop, and plug its adapter into the wall.  But what if you’re watching movies on your laptop while driving though (This is not recommended – death and dismemberment may result), what will you do if you run low on power?  The obvious answer is to acquire and use a car laptop power adapter.

Car laptop power adapters are nothing new.  The concept is quite simple really, one end plugs into your laptop, same as your home adapter, and the other plugs into your lighter plug, assuming you got that option, skinflint.  Let’s assume you sprung the extra $300 they charge you for a lighter adapter when you bought your car; this is where you’re going to get power to your laptop.  The principle on which these power adapters operate is pretty simple.  Your home spews out 120v of AC power; this is what your laptop normally uses.  Your car adapter for laptop is going to have to take the measly 12 volts of DC put out by that lighter plug, and turn it into something that your computer can use.  It does this using a power inverter (to convert from DC to AC) and then outputting the AC power at a specific wattage, as labeled on the inverter.  This wattage should be as high as, if not higher than that wattage required for your laptop.  The wattage requirements of your laptop should be clearly labeled somewhere on the device.  They typically require around 65 watts, or less.

You can purchase a laptop car adapter on Amazon, or Tiger Direct, or any other trusted online retailer.  Of course, if you’re the type of person who likes to see the light of day every now and then, you can also purchase one at a local electronics store.  They can run anywhere from $20 to several hundred.  Unless you’re running a microwave in your car to make popcorn (which would be the perfect compliment to those movies you’re not watching while driving) the wattage output of those more expensive devices is not necessary.  You should be safe with any car laptop power adapter under $100.  If plan on running multiple devices with your adapter, keep in mind that the wattage rating of the adapter need to exceed the total wattage of all devices combined.

All kidding aside, there are some genuine benefits to being able to run your laptop in your car.  Even if you’re just powering up the laptop between stops on some epic roadtrip, a car laptop power adapter is going to come in handy.
